Active Release Techniques®
A.R.T. views the body as a whole, taking into account all the muscular skeletal systems: Muscles, tendons, nerves, ligaments, and bone. Through this comprehensive approach, A.R.T. is able to address a wide range of situations. A.R.T. treatment is a hands-on, case-management system that allows the doctor to diagnose and treat injuries to soft tissue (muscle, tendon, ligaments, fascia, and nerves). The most common injuries treated through A.R.T. are repetitive strains, adhesions, and joint dysfunction.
When trauma or injury occurs, the body's natural response is to form scar tissue (adhesions), which has a detrimental effect, causing tissues to change and adhere to themselves and other surrounding structures. The formation of tissue adhesions occurs as a result of the "cumulative injury cycle," and because it is a cycle it is responsible for subsequent aches and pains.
Active Release Techniques® utilizes specific treatment protocols directed at removing the adhesions brought on by the cumulative injury cycle at virtually every structure of the musculoskeletal system. Traditionally, soft-tissue treatment has meant drugs, heat, cold, rest, and massage, which don’t effectively solve soft tissue injuries or have lasting effects. A.R.T. treatment protocols effectively solve these problems by breaking and stopping the cumulative injury cycle, and restoring biomechanical stability and function.
